Our PBAA featured artist for August is Heidi Jenkin, a long-time member of the Chetco Photographer's Association.
On her way to Brookings and photography, Heidi, who attended CalState Fullerton, had a multi-faceted career. Her employment history includes working at a scuba school and at Western Electric, owning a restaurant, being the first UPS female driver in Orange County, and being a registered barber in both California and Oregon.
It was thirty years ago that Heidi discovered Brookings to be her spe- cial place. Or as she says, “It became clear that Brookings was the perfect town to live, and that the Winchuck was the perfect area of Brookings to Heidi also reports that, along with travel, she has most of her life enjoyed photography as a hobby. “Photography and travel seem to be perfect partners. My goal in photography is tocapture the local color, architecture and culture of the area. My travel has given me marvelous shooting opportunities, including South Africa, Iceland and the Hawaiian Islands,” she adds. And yet when asked what place she likes the best, her response is always, “Brookings. Brookings is the best.”
She also feels that Chetco Photographer's Association is one of the things that makes Brookings so special. “It is a wonderful group of supportive photographers, and we share our tips and new ideas as well as go on photo shoots together. It is interesting to me that a group of photographers often sees the same location and then creates an image unique to the individual artist, either by framing, selecting key focus points,or developing the image in post-processing,” she explains.
Heidi’s own unique approach has won her many honors over the years. She placed second in the Advanced Photography division of the 78th Annual Azalea Festival Art Show. Her photo,Chetco River Goes to Sea, has been on the cover of the Brookings/Harbor Map for the past two years and hangs in the City Council Chambers with three other large-format images. She’s been a Canon Camera Timeline Winner, as well as a contributing photographer for the Lion's Club Calendar. In addition, she has photos and metal prints on display at Anderson Chiropractic.
