Artists from the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild present HEAT WAVE

08/29/2018

The featured artists for September at the Manley Art Gallery are 30
members of the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild, a group made up of fiber artists
from Oregon and Southwest Washington.
According to their website, the purpose of the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild is
“…to set and maintain high standards of design, color, and workmanship in
all forms of fiber art, and to educate in the methods of creative fiber
techniques and to stimulate interest therein with the community.”
Heat Wave is the theme of the guild’s show at Manley as well as our
September theme, as this show will fill the entire gallery. The 30
participating artists are also members of High Fiber Diet, a guild subsidiary
that promotes fiber arts as fine art.
For this show, HEAT WAVE, each of the artists was asked to provide an
original artwork related to the theme in some way and incorporated the color
orange. Each was also asked to provide an artist statement about their
piece, describing how and why the Heat Wave theme inspired them. Makers
of all types of fiber art are included.
The Heat Wave show was first displayed in Camas, Washington in May. In
addition, Columbia FiberArts Guild was invited to submit work for the
Patchwork Design 2018 exhibition in Brazil, a commercial quilt expo focused
on art quilts and contemporary fiber.
Columbia Fiber Arts Guild was established in 1969, and over the years, the
number of members has varied from 40 to over 300. The group has also at
times been affiliated with the Embroiderer's Guild of America. As part of its
mission, the guild provides exhibitions, interest groups, area groups,
speakers, and workshops for its members.
